A close microphone and quiet room beat a severe repair. Clipped or missing speech cannot always be reconstructed.

Compare processed and original sound. Check intelligibility, noise, gain and the ends of phrases. Use restore/bypass when processing does not help.
Adjust level and ducking. The bed should leave room for speech and recover naturally. Listen on headphones and normal speakers.
Inspect individual SFX choices. Disable an unnecessary whoosh or impact rather than recooking the whole production. Do not mistake a measured peak check for a listening test.
